Reboot in Windows (BOOTCAMP) without pressing ALT (option) key on system start [MAC]

When on my Mac I want to boot into the Windows partition to play PC games, I have to restart, wait to hear the Apple boot tone,keep pressing Option until the hard disk icons appear and then select the Windows partition to boot from.
My Windows partition is installed on the 3rd Hard drive bay (the first two hard disks are used by the Mac Raid system) so I could not select the BOOTCAMP drive to startup from the Mac OS X "startup disk" preferences.
But I have found a way to do it with little script so I don't have to wait and press the option key to select the drive and so on…
If you want to learn how to create that script for your Mac, read on…

First you must know on which device is your BOOTCAMP partition, so open a terminal and execute disktool -l to take a list of the drives attached to your Mac :

In my system the disk0s2 has the BOOTCAMP (or WINDOWS partition) so I have to "bless" this device to boot on the next system reboot.
Using the AppleScript Editor write down (and correct the device and the password) and compile the following code and save as application. Now whenever you click on the newly created app the system will reboot in Windows, no need to keep the Option key down to select the icon.

Hardware Monitor is an application to read out all accessible hardware sensors in Macintosh computers. Currently more than 100 different Macintosh hardware sensors and more than 200 hard drive temperature sensors are supported. The program can visualize the history graphs of the readings, display measured values in a large variety of fashions, or announce readings by speech output. It can also store and export readings. Depending on what sensors are built into your Macintosh system, the following data can be accessed:

Η Nikon παρουσίασε την καινούρια Coolpix S8000, την πιο λεπτή ψηφιακή φωτογραφική μηχανή στον κόσμο με ευρυγώνιο φακό και zoom 10x.

Nikon Coolpix S8000

Η S8000, μία κομψή φωτογραφική μηχανή υψηλών επιδόσεων με video HD, έχει πάχος μόνο 27,3mm και είναι μέλος της νέας σειράς COOLPIX που θα κυκλοφορήσει αυτήν την άνοιξη. Είναι τέλεια για όσους θέλουν να έχουν φωτογράφιες εξαιρετικής ποιότητας δίχως να χρειάζεται να μεταφέρουν μια ογκώδη φωτογραφική μηχανή ή να χάνουν χρόνο κάνοντας ρυθμίσεις. Είναι εύκολη στη χρήση με πολλές αυτόματες ρυθμίσεις, στις οποίες περιλαμβάνονται τέσσερις λειτουργίες κατά του θαμπώματος. Διαθέτει ανάλυση 14,2 megapixel και είναι έτοιμη για άμεση χρήση, λόγω του πολύ σύντομου χρόνου ενεργοποίησής της και του συστήματος AF κλάσης DSLR. Στις περιπτώσεις που μια φωτογραφία δεν είναι «αρκετή» για να καταγράψει τη δράση, μπορείτε να κάνετε άμεση εγγραφή video HD χρησιμοποιώντας το ειδικό κουμπί video. Η λειτουργία video υψηλής ανάλυσης (HD) με στερεοφωνικό ήχο παρέχει ανάλυση 720p και καταγράφει όλη τη δράση με τον εντυπωσιακό ρυθμό των 30 καρέ ανά δευτερόλεπτο.

Υψηλές επιδόσεις

Ο ευρυγώνιος φακός NIKKOR οπτικού zoom 10x με γυαλί εξαιρετικά χαμηλής διασποράς (ED) παρέχει ευκρινή αποτελέσματα είτε όταν κάνετε λήψη φωτογραφιών είτε όταν κάνετε λήψη video υψηλής ανάλυσης (HD). Σας παρέχει επίσης την ελευθερία να τραβήξετε είτε όμορφες, λεπτομερείς κοντινές λήψεις του θέματός σας σε λειτουργία από απόσταση – μέχρι και ένα εκατοστό – είτε εντυπωσιακές ευρυγώνιες απομακρυσμένες λήψεις με τηλεφακό, ιδανικές αν θέλετε να χωρέσει ολόκληρη η ποδοσφαιρική ομάδα.

Το προηγμένο σύστημα ελέγχου φλας παρέχει πιο φυσικά αποτελέσματα κατά τη λήψη φωτογραφιών σε συνθήκες χαμηλού φωτισμού και η εξαιρετικά καθαρή οθόνη LCD 7,5cm (3 ιντσών) υψηλής ανάλυσης (921K dot) ενισχύει τόσο τη λήψη όσο και την προβολή με ελάχιστες αντανακλάσεις, ακόμη και κάτω από έντονο ηλιακό φως.

Δημιουργικά ρυθμιστικά

Η COOLPIX S8000 διαθέτει τα Δημιουργικά ρυθμιστικά, ένα νέο τρόπο επεξεργασίας εικόνων χωρίς τη χρήση προσωπικού υπολογιστή. Η φωτεινότητα, ο κορεσμός και ο χρωματικός τόνος ρυθμίζονται εύκολα με το Δίσκο επιλογών, ώστε η φωτογραφία να εμφανίζεται όπως ακριβώς θέλετε.

Ανώτερη ποιότητα εικόνας

Η S8000 κάνει εύκολη τη λήψη ευκρινών εικόνων με τις τέσσερις λειτουργίες κατά του θαμπώματος, ακόμη και σε κινούμενα θέματα. Το ίδιο συμβαίνει και κατά τη λήψη φωτογραφιών με κράτημα στο χέρι κατά το απόγευμα ή το βράδυ. Η ευαισθησία φωτός ISO 3200 μειώνει τον κίνδυνο θαμπών φωτογραφιών με γρήγορα κινούμενα θέματα ή χαμηλό φωτισμό και συνοδεύεται από τo σύστημα απόσβεσης κραδασμών (VR) με μετατόπιση φακού. Αυτό μειώνει την επίδραση του κουνήματος της φωτογραφικής μηχανής ιδιαίτερα σε συνθήκες χαμηλού φωτισμού ή όταν η φωτογραφική μηχανή δεν είναι σταθερή. Η προηγμένη ανίχνευση κίνησης αντισταθμίζει την κίνηση της φωτογραφικής μηχανής ή του θέματος, πράγμα που είναι ιδιαίτερα χρήσιμο όταν κάνετε λήψη νυχτερινών σκηνών ή αθλημάτων σε εσωτερικό χώρο. Τέλος, με τη λειτουργία επιλογέα καλύτερης λήψης (BSS), η S8000 θα τραβήξει έως και 10 διαδοχικές λήψεις και θα αποθηκεύσει την ευκρινέστερη.

Το σύστημα επεξεργασίας εικόνας έχει βελτιστοποιηθεί με βάση την τεχνολογία ψηφιακής επεξεργασίας εικόνας της Nikon, EXPEED. Η φόρτιση της φωτογραφικής σας μηχανής μπορεί να γίνει από τον σταθερό ή τον φορητό υπολογιστή σας με το μετασχηματιστή φόρτισης USB, όταν δεν είναι διαθέσιμη μια παροχή ρεύματος. Η COOLPIX S8000 διαθέτει ελκυστικό φινίρισμα αλουμινίου με ελαστική επίστρωση για καλύτερο κράτημα και διατίθεται σε τρία χρώματα: μαύρο, καφέ και σαμπανιζέ.

H ελεύθερη, η αρραβωνιασμένη και η παντρεμένη…. (Joke)

Αργοπίνοντας το ποτό της, η ελεύθερη από τις τρεις φίλες λέει: «Την περασμένη Παρασκευή, μετά τη δουλειά, πήγα στο γραφείο του φίλου μου που δούλευε ως αργά, φορώντας μόνο ένα δερμάτινο πανωφόρι.

Πριν χτυπήσω την πόρτα, έβαλα μια μάσκα, άφησα το πανωφόρι να γλιστρήσει από πάνω μου, και έμεινα με ένα δερμάτινο κορσάζ, κάλτσες μαύρες νάιλον και ψηλά τακούνια. Ο φίλος μου ερεθίστηκε τόσο που κάναμε παθιασμένο έρωτα πάνω στο γραφείο του».

Η αρραβωνιασμένη αφήνει ένα νευρικό γελάκι και λέει:

« Περίπου τα ίδια είχα κι εγώ! Όταν ο αρραβωνιαστικός μου ήρθε την Παρασκευή, με βρήκε να φοράω μια μαύρη μάσκα , δερμάτινο κορσάζ, μαύρες νάιλον κάλτσες και ψηλοτάκουνες γόβες. Ερεθίστηκε τόσο, που κάναμε έρωτα όλη τη νύχτα, και τώρα θέλει να επισπεύσουμε την ημερομηνία του γάμου.

Η παντρεμένη αφήνει αργά το ποτήρι της στο μπαρ και λέει: «

Εγώ το σχεδίασα πολύ καλά. Άφησα τα παιδιά στη μητέρα μου, έκανα ένα αρωματισμένο μπάνιο, έβαλα ένα σφιχτό δερμάτινο κορσάζ, ζαρτιέρες και μαύρες νάιλον κάλτσες και δωδεκάποντες γόβες. Τελείωσα την προετοιμασία μου ,με μια μαύρη μάσκα. Όταν ο άντρας μου επέστρεψε από τη δουλειά του, πήγε στο ψυγείο και πήρε μια μπύρα, πήρε το τηλεκοντρόλ, με κοίταξε, κάθισε στον καναπέ και είπε: «Δεν μου λες, Μπάτμαν, τι έχει να φάμε για βράδυ;»

Σοβαρές παρενέργειες από το εμβόλιο της γρίπης

Σαράντα ένα σοβαρές ανεπιθύμητες ενέργειες μετά τη χρήση του εμβολίου για τη νέα γρίπη, ιατρικά επιβεβαιωμένες, έχουν καταγραφεί επί συνόλου 350 χιλιάδων εμβολιασμών που είχαν γίνει ως τις 3 Ιανουαρίου 2010.

Τα δύο σοβαρότερα περιστατικά αφορούν στον ενδομήτριο θάνατο δύο εμβρύων, στην 34η εβδομάδα και 22η εβδομάδα της κύησης λίγες ημέρες μετά τον εμβολιασμό. Οι άλλες περιπτώσεις αφορούσαν καρδιαγγειακές διαταραχές, κι ακόμη διαταραχές του ανοσοποιητικού συστήματος, του νευρικού και του αναπνευστικού.

Από την έναρξη των εμβολιασμών, έως και τις 3 Ιανουαρίου έχουν χορηγηθεί 2.122 δόσεις εμβολίων σε εγκύους και έχουν κοινοποιηθεί στον ΕΟΦ επτά αναφορές πιθανών ανεπιθύμητων ενεργειών σε εγκύους. Οι πέντε αναφορές αφορούσαν τις ίδιες τις μητέρες. Όμως τα τελευταία 2 κρούσματα αφορούσαν στα ίδια τα έμβρυα. Γεγονός που ανησυχεί τους επιστήμονες.

Η πρώτη διένυε τον 8ο μήνα της εγκυμοσύνης και η δεύτερη τον πέμπτο. Και στις δύο διαπιστώθηκε ενδομήτριος θάνατος των εμβρύων 15 ημέρες μετά τον εμβολιασμό τους μετά τον εμβολιασμό τους.

Μέχρι σήμερα στην Ελλάδα έχουν χορηγηθεί περισσότερες από 360 χιλιάδες δόσεις του πανδημικού εμβολίου. O Ε.Ο.Φ. επιβεβαίωσε σαράντα μία σοβαρές ανεπιθύμητες ενέργειες. Οι ασθενείς εμφάνισαν κυρίως καρδιαγγειακές , νευρολογικές και αναπνευστικές διαταραχές ενώ κάποιοι άλλοι εμφάνισαν επιπλοκές στο ανοσοποιητικό τους σύστημα ή λοιμώξεις.

Εντωμεταξύ , ο επικεφαλής του τμήματος υγείας της Ευρώπης ζητά από όλες τις χώρες να διεξάγουν έρευνα σχετικά με τις παραγγελίες των εμβολίων καθώς τα περισσότερα παραμένουν στα αζήτητα.

Ο κ. Γούνταργκ υποστήριξε πως η κήρυξη της πανδημίας ήταν ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα σκάνδαλα καθώς η γρίπη αποδείχθηκε ήπια. Μέχρι σήμερα στην Ελλάδα 90 άνθρωποι έχουν χάσει τη ζωή τους εξαιτίας του ιού της νέας γρίπης .

17 νεκροί έχουν ανασυρθεί από το Θρακικό Πέλαγος

Στους 17 έφτασε ο αριθμός των νεκρών από την τραγωδία στο Θρακικό Πέλαγος που συνέβη πιθανότατα την παραμονή της Πρωτοχρονιάς.

Ειδικότερα, το πρωί της Παρασκευής (8/1) σκάφος του λιμενικού περισυνέλεξε το νεκρό σώμα ενός 2χρονου αγοριού, δύο ανδρών από την περιοχή Απαλού και μια σορό στην περιοχή Μάκρης.

Ήδη στη θαλάσσια περιοχή του Έβρου και της Ροδόπης έχουν περισυλλεγεί τα κουφάρια 9 ανδρών και τεσσάρων γυναικών όλοι αλλοδαποί και νεαρής ηλικίας.

Η αστυνομία πιστεύει πως όλα τα πτώματα είχαν σχέση με το τραγικό συμβάν ενώ συνεχίζονται οι έρευνες για τον εντοπισμό και άλλων σορών.

Απεβίωσε ο “διπλός” επιζών της Χιροσίμα-Ναγκασάκι

Πέθανε σε ηλικία 93 ετών ο μοναδικός άνθρωπος στην Ιστορία που γλίτωσε και από τις δύο βόμβες σε Χιροσίμα και Ναγκασάκι τον Αύγουστο του 1945.

Ο Τσουτόμου Γιαμαγκούτσι βρισκόταν σε επαγγελματικό ταξίδι στη Χιροσίμα το 1945 όταν η ατομική βόμβα των αμερικανών έσκασε στην πόλη στις 8:15 το πρωί της 6ης Αυγούστου.

Ο Γιαμαγκούτσι τρεις ημέρες αργότερα επέστρεψε στο σπίτι του στο Ναγκασάκι αλλά το παιχνίδι της μοίρας ήταν παράξενο και το πρωί της 9ης Αυγούστου η δεύτερη ατομική βόμβα έσκασε στο Ναγκασάκι.

Από τις δύο ατομικές βόμβες είχαν σκοτωθεί πάνω από 200.000 άνθρωποι, 140.000 στη Χιροσίμα και 70.000 στο Ναγκασάκι, ενώ η συντριπτική πλειοψηφία των επιζώντων καταπονήθηκε από ασθένειες που σχετίζονται με τη ραδιενέργεια, όπως ο καρκίνος.

Ο Γιαμαγκούτσι είχε χάσει την ακοή του εξαιτίας των βομβών παθαίνοντας παράλληλα εγκαύματα δευτέρου βαθμού σε όλο του το σώμα, ενώ προσβλήθηκε από λευχαιμία, καταρράκτη και πολλές άλλες ασθένειες από τις ατομικές βόμβες.

Τελικά, απεβίωσε την Τρίτη (5/1) χάνοντας τη μάχη για τη ζωή από καρκίνο στο στομάχι.

LG HR500 Blu-ray player DVB-T and HDD recorder

Ελθούσας της Digea, της ψηφιακής τηλεόρασης δηλαδή, από τις συσκευές μας θα απαιτούμε και δυνατότητα εγγραφής.

Η LG έχει ήδη ετοιμάζει ένα Blu-ray player με ενσωματωμένο σκληρό δίσκο και διπλό δέκτη.

Πρόκειται για το HR500 που διαθέτει σκληρό δίσκο 250GB που χρησιμοποιείται για τηλεοπτικές εγγραφές από τα ψηφιακά κανάλια DVB-T MPEG4.

Aν τα 250GB δεν είναι αρκετά υπάρχει και υποδοχή USB για το «κάρφωμα» μνημών USB ή εξωτερικών σκληρών δίσκων. H εγγραφή των εκπομπών μπορεί να «γίνει» και προς τα «έξω», δηλαδή σε εξωτερικές μονάδες αποθήκευσης. Το HR500 έχει, επίσης, και δυνατές δικτυακές δυνατότητες τόσο ενσύρματες Ethernet όσο και ασύρματες WLAN (Wi-Fi). Μπορεί δηλαδή να «δει» το PC μας ώστε να αντλήσει από εκεί media αρχεία για να τ΄ αναπαράγει. Η συσκευή τέλος μπορεί να «πιάσει» και δικτυακές υπηρεσίες όπως YouTube, Picasa, Accuwhether και άλλα.

Πάνω από όλα η συσκευή είναι όμως ένα πλήρως εξοπλισμένο Blu-ray player!

Ασύρματα USB ακουστικά Logitech ClearChat PC Wireless Headset

Το Logitech ClearChat PC Wireless headset συνδυάζει υψηλής απόδοσης στερεοφωνικό ήχο με ασύρματη τεχνολογία μετάδοσης στα 2.4 GHz, επιτρέποντας στους χρήστες να κάνουν τα τηλέφωνα τους μέσω VoIP χωρίς καμία δέσμευση από καλώδια, χωρίς ούτε καν να χρειάζεται να κάθονται μπροστά στον υπολογιστή τους.

Digea Ψηφιακή Τηλεόραση : Oι περιοχές που θα έχουν σήμα από το 2010

Το Techblog.gr παρουσιάζει τη λίστα με τα 23 πρώτα σημεία εκπομπής σήματος ψηφιακής τηλεόρασης DIGEA όπως αυτά ορίζονται στην Κοινή Υπουργική Απόφαση 21181/08. Ιωάννινα, Φλώρινα, Σέρρες, Αλεξανδρούπολη, Ηράκλειο, Χανιά, Καλαμάτα, Σπάρτη, Τρίπολη είναι μερικές από τις περιοχές που από το 2010 θα ξεκινήσουν διαδοχικά να καλύπτονται από σήμα επίγειας ψηφιακής τηλεόρασης DIGEA.

Σημαντικό: Εκτός από τα κέντρα εκπομπής του Υμηττού και του Χορτιάτη στα υπόλοιπα 21 σημεία όπου θα ανάβει το ψηφιακό σήμα θα σβήνει το αναλογικό. Η ακριβής ημερομηνία εκπομπής του ψηφιακού σήματος ανά περιοχή θα ανακοινώνεται έγκαιρα, ώστε οι χρήστες να προλαβαίνουν να προμηθεύονται τον απαραίτητο εξοπλισμό. Όσες περιοχές δεν είναι στη λίστα, θα μπουν στο πρόγραμμα από το 2011 και απαραίτητα έως τις 31 Δεκεμβρίου 2012.

Σαμπάνιες … για την πρωτοχρονιά και όχι μόνο

Στις γιορτές ταιριάζουν οι φυσαλίδες… το έχουμε ξαναπεί. Αλλα οι φυσαλίδες ταιριαζουν ιδιαίτερα την Πρωτοχρονιά!.

Και την πρωτοχρονιά, δεν χωρούν συμβιβασμοί! Οι φυσαλίδες της γαλλικής Σαμπάνιας έχουν σιγουρα …άλλη χάρη! Ιδιαιτερα μαλιστα όταν το House of Wine διαθέτει εκλεκτες σαμπανιες για όλα τα βαλάντια! Σας προτείνω λοιπόν 9 εξαιρετικές σαμπάνιες (γαλλικές, φυσικά), μεταξύ 30 και 40 Ευρώ.

Magic-Mouse Middle Click + Expose + Spaces + more !!

I had bought the Magic mouse from Apple but I was not using it because of the lack of Expose buttons and middle mouse click.
Sure Apple will upgrade the mouse driver to support these but for now there is an application that adds these missing things to the new Magic Mouse…!!

It's the MagicPrefs application that you can download from here. The setup is very simple (you also see images for every action) and you can apply anything (spaces / dashboard / expose / apps) to tap or clicks.
Now Magic-mouse can do the same and even more than the Mighty Mouse !!!

Photo Lessons : 10 Reasons to Turn OFF Your Autofocus

When I started using a camera autofocus was something out of science fiction. I mean … it would never work in real life, would it? Apart from anything else, how could it know what you wanted to focus on?

Now fiction has become fact, and pretty well every camera has AF as standard. It works, and works well. But it doesn’t always work perfectly. It can pick up the wrong thing or fail to find anything to focus on, causing the lens to ‘hunt’ back and forth. Sometimes it won’t even let you fire the shutter.

So, here are ten situations when it’s worth turning your autofocus off and going back to the ‘good old days’ of manual focusing:
1. When there’s not enough light
In low light, contrast is also low, and AF relies on light and contrast to latch on to things. Your camera may have an AF assist lamp built in. But, even if you have it switched on, it won’t work in situations like in the shot above.

Though the image looks bright enough, in reality there was little light, and it required a 30-second exposure.
2. When there’s not enough contrast
If your AF metering spot is on something like a plain-coloured wall the camera will find it impossible to focus, no matter how bright the light, and the lens will ‘hunt’. You can re-frame your shot temporarily so the spot is on something with detail and press the shutter half down to activate the AF. Then keep the shutter button half-pressed to lock the focus, and go back to your original composition. Or focus by hand.
3. Shooting wildlife
Most wild animals have excellent hearing and, no matter how good your autofocus, it will make a noise. Even the slightest whirr is likely to spook wildlife. Switch it off if you want those great, natural wildlife shots.
4. With landscapes
When shooting landscapes you usually want things in focus from the foreground to distant mountains. This means closing down the aperture to increase depth of field and focusing about a third of the way into the scene (at a point called the ‘hyperfocal distance’ where everything from quite close to infinity is sharp). Switch off the AF. If you leave it on, when you press the shutter it will re-focus … probably on those far-off mountains.
5. If you’re doing HDR
High Dynamic Range photography involves taking several shots of the same scene, all exactly the same except for exposure, then blending them when you’re back at the computer. It’s important to have identical focus in each shot to ensure success. With AF on, it may choose a slightly different focus point for each shot.
6. Fast action
When you’re photographing a fast-moving subject, your AF will have its work cut out to keep up with the changing distances. Most times it fails. At this jump, in a radio-controlled buggy competition, I first started shooting in burst mode, with the AF switched on. This was the sort of thing I kept getting.

It wasn’t until I switched the AF (and burst mode) off and pre-focused on a spot where most of the buggies landed that I started to get decent shots.

7. Shooting through glass
Taking photographs through glass is generally not a good idea. Avoid it if you can. But sometimes it’s unavoidable, e.g. if you’re in a plane, or photographing fish in an aquarium. The trouble is, the AF may home in on reflections, or marks on the glass. So switch it off.
8. With portraits
The golden rule of portraiture is to focus on your subject’s eyes. What’s more, you often use a wide aperture to throw the background out of focus. But if your autofocus picks up your subject’s eyebrows or the tip of the nose then, because you’ve got such a narrow depth of field, the eyes will be blurred.
9. Macro
With macro photography autofocus has a hard time. The depth of field is so tiny that the camera has no idea what you want to focus on and the lens is likely to hunt wildly. You definitely must take control.
10. Composition with the ‘Rule of Thirds’
Many cameras have the autofocus spot fixed in the middle of the viewfinder. This means that if you’re composing with your subject at one of the classical ‘thirds’ positions it is likely to be out of focus.

In this image a centralised autofocus would not pick up the boat and, on top of that, it would have difficulty latching to the smooth water of the lake.

So … autofocus is brilliant but it’s not infallible. A good photographer knows when to take control of the camera to get great shots in challenging situations

Reset your lost Mac OS X password (APPLE)

You can reset a lost Administrator (the original account you created) password in Mac OS X by utilizing a Mac OS X installation DVD, here’s how:

* Insert the Mac OS X DVD into your Mac’s DVD drive
* Restart the Mac and hold down the ‘C’ key to boot from the DVD
* You’ll see a language selection screen, select your language (English) and continue
* Navigate to the ‘Utilities’ menu, select “Reset Password”
* Select the Mac OS X boot drive
* Select the original user account (not the root user!) and choose a new password
* Reboot as usual
* Your Mac administrator password is now reset!

BANSKO : Το πιο σύγχρονο χιονοδρομικό κέντρο των Βαλκανίων

Το Bansko χτισμένο σε υψόμετρο 925μ (και οι πίστες του σκι είναι σε ύψος 2.000 – 2.500μ.) αποτελεί πλέον έναν από τους πιο εύκολους και προσιτούς προορισμούς για σκι στην Ευρώπη, αφού προσφέρει στους φίλους του αθλήματος τις καλύτερες και πιο μοντέρνες εγκαταστάσεις μεταξύ άλλων Βουλγαρικών χιονοδρομικών κέντρων. Επιπλέον διαθέτει καταλύματα για όλα τα οικονομικά επίπεδα, από lux ξενοδοχεία με spa και gourmet εστιατόρια μέχρι μικρές παραδοσιακές μονάδες.

Το πεδίο δράσης χωρίζεται σε δύο περιοχές, την Valog (1100 μ. – 1600 μ.) και τη Shikigarnika (1700 μ. – 2500 μ.), οι οποίες βρίσκονται στη βόρεια πλευρά του όρους Pirin, περίπου 10 χλμ. πάνω από το χωριό. Το χιονοδρομικό που αριθμεί μόλις 10 χρόνια λειτουργίας, είναι ήδη φημισμένο για την ποιότητα και διάρκεια του χιονιού, αφού η χιονόπτωση ξεκινά στις αρχές του Δεκέμβρη και οι χειμερινές δραστηριότητες δεν τελειώνουν πριν τα τέλη Απριλίου.

Στις εγκαταστάσεις του θα βρείτε, εκτός από καρεκλάκια και συρόμενα, μια οκταθέσια γόνδολα η οποία συνδέει σε 25 λεπτά το χωριό με τις πίστες. Εντυπωσιακή επένδυση είναι τα ειδικά μόνιτορ που έχουν τοποθετηθεί στη βάση του χιονοδρομικού με σκοπό να μεταδίδουν live εικόνες από τις πίστες και να ενημερώνουν για την ισχύ του ανέμου και την θερμοκρασία, έτσι ώστε κάθε επισκέπτης να γνωρίζει τις χιονοδρομικές συνθήκες πριν ανέβει στο βουνό. Όλες οι πίστες του σκι έχουν συνολικό μήκος 14 χλμ. και υποστηρίζονται από 2 ανεβατήρες (13 ski lift).

Το Bansko δεν είναι μόνο ένα θέρετρο αλλά και ένα όμορφο ιστορικό μνημείο. Το θέρετρο βρίσκεται στη νοτιοδυτική Βουλγαρία στους πρόποδες του πανέμορφου βουνού Pirin, το οποίο περιλαμβάνεται στον κατάλογο παγκόσμιας φυσικής κληρονομιάς.

Η ίδια η πόλη προσελκύει τους επισκέπτες με τα 120 πολιτιστικά μνημεία της, τα μουσεία της και τις μόνιμες εθνογραφικές εκθέσεις. Μια πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα επίσκεψη είναι στην εκκλησία της Αγίας Τριάδας με τον υψηλό πύργο των 30 μ. και το ρολόι, τις θαυμάσιες τοιχογραφίες και τα ξυλόγλυπτα. Τοποθετημένο ανάμεσα στο βουνό Pirin, το βουνό Rila και τα βουνά της Ροδόπης, το Bansko είναι ένα συμπαθητικό θέρετρο, με σύντομο καλοκαίρι και μακρύ χειμώνα. Η περίοδος του σκι αρχίζει στα μέσα Δεκεμβρίου και τελειώνει στα μέσα Απριλίου.

Κατά την παραμονή σας εδώ μην ξεχάσετε να επισκεφθείτε μια mehana ή αλλιώς παραδοσιακή ταβέρνα και να γευθείτε αυθεντικές βουλγάρικες σπεσιαλιτέ και καλό σπιτικό κρασί. Επίσης εάν δεν διαμένετε στο πανέμορφο ξενοδοχείο Kempinski 5* μην παραλείψετε να το επισκεφθείτε έστω για ένα καφέ. Σίγουρα θα σας εντυπωσιάσει!

Η απόσταση μεταξύ Θεσσαλονίκης και Bansko είναι 210 χλμ. και μεταξύ Αθήνας και Μπάνσκο είναι 720 χλμ.

Επιτέλους χιονισμένο το τοπίο στη Β. Ελλάδα !!

Χιονισμένο είναι το τοπίο σε πολλές περιοχές στα ορεινά της Κεντρικής και της Δυτικής Μακεδονίας, ενώ οι αλυσίδες είναι απαραίτητες για την πρόσβαση των οχημάτων στα χιονοδρομικά κέντρα. Αλυσίδες απαιτούνται για την πρόσβαση των οχημάτων στο χιονοδρομικό κέντρο Βόρας (Καϊμάκτσαλαν) από τον Άγιο Αθανάσιο, την Άρνισσα, αλλά και την Κερασιά. Οι αλυσίδες είναι απαραίτητες για την πρόσβαση των οχημάτων στο χιονοδρομικό κέντρο «3-5 Πηγάδια», αλλά και προς το εθνικό χιονοδρομικό κέντρο Σελίου από το δρόμο της Βέροιας. Ο δρόμος από τη Νάουσα προς το Σέλι, είναι κλειστός. Καθαρό είναι το οδικό δίκτυο στις Σέρρες, αλλά και στον Πολύγυρο της Χαλκιδικής, ενώ αλυσίδες απαιτούνται για την κίνηση των οχημάτων στο Βίτσι, του νομού Φλώρινας (18ο έως 28ο χλμ.). Οι αλυσίδες είναι απαραίτητες για την κίνηση των οχημάτων στο δρόμος Καστοριάς-Αμυνταίου (22ο-38ο χλμ.) αλλά και Καστοριάς-Ιωαννίνων μέσω Νεστορίου (30ο-60ο χλμ.). Χωρίς αλυσίδες γίνεται η πρόσβαση των οχημάτων στο χιονοδρομικό κέντρο της Βασιλίτσας, στο νομό Γρεβενών. Εν τω μεταξύ, καταστροφές σε 1.000 περίπου στρέμματα προκάλεσε υπερχείλιση των ποταμών στην περιοχή της Φαρκαδόνας, σύμφωνα με τον αρμόδιο αντινομάρχη Τρικάλων, Χρήστο Μιχαλάκη.

Singapore’s Stunning Digital Cloud Skyscraper

This incredible pixelated skyscraper by Singapore-based Design Act was a finalist in a competition to design a pavilion for the World Expo 2010.
Entitled “My Dream, Our Vision”, the project uses permutated cubes to generate a spectacular modular sculpture that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Singapore as an efficient, dynamic, cosmopolitan, and forward-looking nation.

Simultaneously futuristic and traditional, the Singapore spirit 新 (xin, mandarin word for “new”) serves as a key metaphor for Design Act’s entry, which envisions Singapore as a progressive, re-inventive and innovative place.

The pavilion takes the form of an illuminated digital cloud hovering over an ever-changing “green” pasture. It invites you to enter a dark underground space with audio feeds alluding to the background services which serve the city, and catapults you into the bright and white digital cloud, where you are encouraged to post your dreams. Made of 3866 cubes of modular sizes with varying levels of transparency, the pavilion makes excellent use of natural light and is strategically sloped at the base to give visitors full view of the sights on display.

The BEST places to visit in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is an attractive, tourist-friendly destination that hosts over 5 million visitors a year. Interlaced with many canals, Amsterdam offers a festive atmosphere, interesting places to visit, great beer, lots of entertainment and number of popular nightclubs. The city is a haven for good food, good fun and its unique cultural environment attracts numerous travelers, but especially twenty-somethings from around the world. Amsterdam is a city with an edge to it. It mixes the old with the new, Calvinism with the sexual revolution, conservatism with laissez-faire and yet it retains a practicality that is the hallmark of Dutch society. Many travelers passing through Amsterdam's airport on the way to other destinations take the opportunity to spend a day or two in the town's festive atmosphere. The common complaint about Amsterdam is that – "It's too much fun – I had to leave…!"
Amsterdam has numerous tourist attractions and attempting to see all of them all could while away your time and money. Most of the attractions are of minor importance and some are uninteresting. Others are tacky, unusual, humorous (like the Sex Museum and the Erotic Museum) or extremely touristy. However none of this seems to keeps the crowds from visiting.

In our recounting of the best places to visit in Amsterdam, we focus on twelve of the city’s many attractions including two that are “must sees” – the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum!
Of course, we should note that the relatively new Heineken Experience now claims to be the most popular attraction in town, but we think that title is actually held by the bars and other venues in the town's Red Light District.

Guide to the Best Places to Visit in Amsterdam Anne Frank House
The Anne Frank House (267 Prinsengracht) is the most popular tourist attraction in Amsterdam. When you approach the house from Prisengracht, you will wonder where the Anne Frank House is located – the photographs and images that most of us associate with the Anne Frank Huis are of the back of the Annex and not visible from the street.

Visiting is a sobering experience, made even more melancholy by the knowledge of Anne Frank's death from typhoid shortly before her concentration camp was liberated near the end of World War II. Some say she died of a broken heart, mistakenly believing her entire family had preceded her in death. Her sister Margot, who was in the same camp as Anne, died several weeks before her of the same epidemic. Her mother died in Auschwitz, where she and her daughters were originally sent. Later Margot and Anne were transferred to Bergen-belsen.

As you walk from room to room, you will begin to feel that you are an observer watching the unfolding of a horrible story. Touring the house, reading the placards, and watching the short films takes about an hour. You will be mentally exhausted by the time you finish. There is a comfortable cafeteria offering food and beverages just before the exit.

Arrive near opening or closing times, as the crowds during the rest of the day (even in off-season) can be significant and the wait lengthy. The building is small and the rooms can be very crowded during peak hours in the summer.

Visiting the Anne Frank Huis is not for the infirm or physically challenged. There are many, long steep stairways and narrow corridors to contend with – a reflection of the “hidden” nature of this sanctuary. There is only one route through the house and most visitors, riveted by the displays, take their time while learning the significance of this tribute to bravery in the face of repression.

The front of the house, which is the entrance, is the location of the business that was once owned by Otto Frank, while the back part of the property, called the Secret Annex, is where the family lived in hiding.

Van Gogh Museum

The compact Van Gogh museum wears the Crown of Amsterdam's art museums and is the second most popular attraction in the city. You should not miss the chance to see the amazing works in this collection. The museum, which houses the world’s largest collection of Van Gogh's paintings, is located in close proximity to the Rijksmuseum on the Museumplein. You can walk to the Museumplein from the Dam in about thirty minutes or arrive in ten minutes by hopping a local streetcar.

Van Gogh’s works are displayed chronologically and the progression through palettes and techniques is astounding, showing the artist’s talent for innovation and his fearless attitude towards change. As his painting techniques evolve through Van Gogh's life, they appear to reflect various stages of his dementia. All of Van Gogh's works displayed in the Museum are outstanding. The range of style is so diverse that it is difficult to understand how these paintings were created by the same artist. Perhaps there were several personalities inside of Vincent.

The building is usually packed with visitors, but the display rooms are large and handle the crowds well. If you want to study his works, there is platform seating in the center of most rooms for those who desire an extended viewing (or those who are just plain tired of walking).

Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum, also located at the Museumplein, is undergoing major renovations and most of the facility will remain closed until the “new” Rijksmuseum reopens during the 2012-2013 timeframe, depending on the building permit processing. In order to make the best of a bad situation discovered during the renovation (environmental problems) the museum staff has moved some of its collection to an exhibition space in the redesigned Phillips Wing of the Museum. In an exhibit called The Masterpieces, you will find the highlights of the museum's "Dutch Golden Age" collection.

The exhibit combines a number of works by the Dutch Masters, with pottery, furniture, statuary and other examples of the beaux-arts. The display areas feel cramped and the order of presentation is bewildering. The show seems forced and is underwhelming for the fee being charged. Unless you are determined to see Rembrandt’s remarkable "Night Watch", you might consider skipping the Rijksmuseum.

There are small, garden areas on each side of the Rijksmuseum that, on sunny days, are pleasant places to take a break and watch the world go by.

There is a branch of the Rijksmuseum at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport behind passport control and it is a good place to visit if you have a long wait between flights.

The Dam and Royal Palace
The Dam is a short walk from the train station. It is a large, unremarkable square in front of a historic building that is now a Royal Palace and was formerly the Town Hall.

The Dam is the designated "place to meet” in Amsterdam due to its size and closeness to many of the city' attractions, bars and restaurants. I

t is usually crowded, especially on weekends. Later in the day on weekdays and most anytime on Saturday, street performers frequent the Dam. Some of the acts are humorous and all are entertaining. In addition, a very popular shopping area starts just south of the Dam along Kalverstraat and extends for several blocks.

The Royal Palace is now open for touring, after having been closed for renovations for several years.

The Palace is supported by over ten thousand wooden piers (pilings) that help distribute the weight of the large structure over the soft, marshy landscape in this area of the city. The building was originally the Amsterdam Town Hall (1655) and became a palace in the 19th century.

The Red Light District
The main road from the Centraal Station to the Dam is the Damrak. Between the Damrak and the canal Achterburg, in an area surrounding the Oude Kerk you will find Amsterdam’s famous Red Light District. At night, the area is a bastion of neon, bars, partying and crowds. It is one of the few places you will visit where you might happen to look up and see what looks like a department store window filled with compartments and women modeling lingerie in them – well, that’s not actually what is being sold.

If you think you would like a walk on the seamy side, perhaps the red light district is for you. As a matter of fact, almost every tourist who visits Amsterdam take a brief walkthrough, just to see what it looks like. If you are in Amsterdam just for sightseeing avoid the Red Light District in the late evening as druggies and drunks seem to dominate the area. If you are in town to party, late evenings here seem to be very popular.

The Amsterdam city council is trying to clean up the image of the Red Light District and has considered banning some of the more obvious displays advertising prostitution, which is considered by many visitors to be one of the signature calling cards of the area. It's not that most tourists are interested in these services, but many seem to want to experience the atmosphere of this over-the-top Red Light District. While we are on the subject, you can find one of Amsterdam's two sex museums (the Sexmuseum Venus Temple) at Damrak 18, just a block or so from the Centraal Train Station. The Erotic Museum is in the Red Light District at Oudeezids Achterburgwal 54.

The Heineken Experience
The world-famous Heineken Beer was first brewed in Amsterdam in 1863 and the city is the home of this iconic brand.

The Heineken Experience is not a brewery tour in the formal sense, but closer to a Heineken theme park than anything else. Clearly stating that the attraction is an "experience", not a museum, Heineken has converted a former brewery into a multi-story world of Heineken. Of course, you will get to sample some brew and have a great time in the process. For more information and to make reservations, see the Heineken Experience website.

The Heineken Experience is located at Stadhouderskade 78 in Amsterdam.

If you choose, you can arrive by boat and disembark at the front of the brewery. Alternatively, from the Central Station takes the tram (lines 16, 24, or 25).

By the way, visitors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

The Flower Market

If you walk to or from the Dam to the Museumplein, you will find the Bloemenmarkt (Flower Market) along the Singel Canal between Vijzelstraat and Leidsestraat.

The Flower Market is an attraction that adds a definite touch of color to this somewhat drab city. Although you may not notice at first, the flower market is housed on a collection of barges floating on the canal.

About a dozen shops are available and each has a wide variety of flowers on display. In most shops you will, also, find cannabis starter kits, something we have not found in our garden shops at home. Although good for a laugh, we recommend you avoid buying the cannabis kits, if possessing or growing marijuana is illegal in your home country.

There are a few interesting non-flower shops on the street, but most travelers focus on one store that displays an impressive variety of Christmas ornaments year round (just follow the crowd).

At the east end of the Flower Market (at the Muntplein recognizable by the unusual clock tower at the former mint (the Munttoren)), you will find a Maoz Falafel shop at Muntplein 1. Maoz has several shops around the city (one just off Damrak (Oudebrugsteeg 30) as you leave the train station) and has the best falafel this side of the Middle East (limited seating but great food for a small price).
Canal Boat Rides

A fleet of glass-covered boats ply the canals of Amsterdam. The rides are more expensive than public transportation but the canals have a magnetic pull for most tourists. You can buy various types of tickets, including one that lets you stop and explore, returning to another boat later to continue your journey. Yet another canal boat connects to the Museum Plein.

Canal boats in Amsterdam run on frequent schedules and there are many locations to access the boats.

The boats are popular with tourists, but the reality of Amsterdam’s canals is that they are pleasant but not especially scenic. The architecture that can be seen from the canals is interesting and many of the canal-side houses are unique and seeing them from a canal adds to the experience. After all, how many times are you going to get to experience a canal ride in one of the world's famous cities?

The Stedelijk Museum
The Stedelijk Museum facility at the Museumplein (Museum Square) is closed and will re-open on the Museumplein in April of 2010. Parts of its collection (but not the classic modern work for which it is so well known) are on display at various locations throughout the city until the new facility opens. For information on what collections are is being shown and where (until 2010), you will need to check with the Stedelijk's official website.

Nemo Science Center

The Nemo Science Center (the hulking green boat-shaped building atop a tunnel in the harbor) is a great place to visit if you are traveling with children. It is not everyday that you will run into a exhibition whose major rule is "forbidden not to touch". We suspect the exhibits will interest parents and especially children enthusiastic about science and technology.

The Hermitage Amsterdam
Located in at elegant 17th century building at Amstel 51 in the heart of Amsterdam is the newly renovated Hermitage Amsterdam, a facility focused on exploring the richness and grandeur of Russia's artistic heritage. If you are enchanted with Tsars and Russia in the 19th century, you may find this new museum just the place for you. See the official website for more information.

Rembrandthuis
The Rembrandt House Museum is located in central Amsterdam near the Waterlooplein at Jodenbreestraat 4.

Although a successful painter, Rembrandt was not good with money and eventually was forced to declared bankruptcy. The house where he had lived for twenty years and its contents were auctioned in 1658 and Rembrandt was forced to start again in a much smaller house and with limited examples of his own artwork.

While the Rembrandt House Museum is the property where Rembrandt spent most of his time in Amsterdam, the house is decorated with recreations of what existed in the house when he was in residence. It has a collection of Rembrandt's etchings, but his major paintings are in other museums. The museum may be of interest to some, but we were not particularly impressed with what we saw. Πέντε όργανα γυμναστικής για… λίγους

Πρόκειται για τις μεγαλύτερες εταιρείες οργάνων γυμναστικής παγκοσμίως, που εξοπλίζουν με τα μηχανήματά τους κορυφαία γυμναστήρια σε κάθε γωνιά της γης. Οι λύσεις που προσφέρουν στον χώρο του fitness, είναι ο,τι πιο καινούργιο και λειτουργικό έχουμε δει. Εξειδικευμένες λειτουργίες και προγράμματα, πλήρη προσαρμογή στις ανάγκες του αθλούμενου και προστασία από πιθανούς τραυματισμούς. Πέρα από τους χώρους των γυμναστηρίων όμως, οι ολοκληρωμένες σειρές οργάνων των παραπάνω εταιρειών περιέχουν και εξειδικευμένα μηχανήματα προσωπικής εκγύμνασης για το σπίτι. Η ποιότητα, αντοχή και λειτουργικότητα των οργάνων αυτών αγγίζουν το τέλειο, γεγονός που αντικατοπτρίζεται και στις τιμές τους. Σε αυτό το άρθρο δεν θα βρείτε "οικονομικούς" διαδρόμους και low budget πάγκους γυμναστικής, ούτε όμως και πολυτελή μηχανήματα με επίχρυσες λεπτομέρειες και δερμάτινα τελειώματα. Όπως μας λένε και οι υπεύθυνοι πωλήσεων των εταιρειών με τις οποίες ήρθαμε σε επαφή, ακόμα και οι πιο απαιτητικοί πελάτες τους (ξενοδοχεία 5*, επιχειρηματίες κτλ.) είναι διατεθειμένοι να πληρώσουν όσο όσο αρκεί να αποκτήσουν αποτελεσματική και ολοκληρωμένη προπόνηση στο σπίτι, συνήθως υπο την επίβλεψη κάποιου personal trainer. Τα παρακάτω όργανα ανταποκρίνονται στις απαιτήσεις και των πιο "περίεργων".

Technogym's Kinesis Personal

Όπως δηλώνει και το όνομά του, το Kinesis βασίζεται εξ'ολοκλήρου στις κινήσεις του ανθρώπινου σώματος για να γυμνάσει τον ασκούμενο αποτελεσματικά και χωρίς καμία επιβάρυνση στις αρθρώσεις. Μας γυρνάει πίσω, στις ρίζες της ανθρώπινης προέλευσης για να ανακαλύψουμε εκ νέου τις φυσικές μας ικανότητες: αντοχή, ισορροπία, δύναμη και ευελιξία. Η προπόνηση που παρέχει το Kinesis αποκαθιστά τη σωστή ισορροπία μεταξύ σώματος και πνεύματος, βελτιώνοντας έτσι την ποιότητα ζωής. Cybex Ft-450

Το μέλλον της προσωπικής εκγύμνασης δεν βρίσκεται στις σιδερένιες μπάρες και στα "στατικά" μηχανήματα. Η Cybex το έχει συνειδητοποιήσει εδώ και καιρό και το Ft-450 (βλ. Gallery) αποτελεί ένα απο τα τελειότερα λειτουργικά μηχανήματα για πλήρη εκγύμναση όλου του σώματος. Με βάση τις τροχαλίες το λειτουργικό αυτό μηχάνημα επιτρέπει την ελεύθερη κίνηση με την λιγότερη δυνατή επιβάρυνση στις αρθρώσεις. Προσαρμοσμένο στις σωματικές ανάγκες του καθενός, το ολοκληρωμένο αυτό σύστημα περιλαμβάνει μαξιλαράκι στήριξης για καλύτερη ισορροπία και δυνατότητα προσαρμογής του μήκους της τροχαλίας, έτσι ώστε να ταιριάξουν ακριβώς με τις σωματικές "ιδιοτροπίες" που έχουμε όλοι μας. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Christmas is a special time, and nowhere is this more true than London. Tuesday, 3rd of November at 5pm marks the annual turning on of the Christmas lights in Oxford Street and Regent Street – announcing the Christmas season well and truly open. Flicking the switch this year will be the stars of the new 3D animation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol: Jim Carrey and Colin Firth.

Santa Claus is coming to town
Department stores such as Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Selfridges each have their own special take on Christmas celebrations. Harrods hosts its annual Christmas Parade through the local streets on Saturday November 7th and each year releases a new Christmas Teddy, this year's bear is named Maxwell.

Selfridges' Christmas shop has been open since the 8th August to give customers plenty of time to get in the festive spirit! If you're on the hunt for some festive fare, why not pick up a Harvey Nick's Christmas hamper ranging from a cool £60 to a very hot £2,500! Walking in a Winter Wonderland

Side by side: D3 vs D700 with MB-D10

The D700 is compatible with the D300's MB-D10 Multi Power Battery Pac, which can accept one EN-EL4a/4/3e or eight AA-size batteries. With the MB-D10 attached the D700 feels very much like a D3 (it's actually a fractionally taller combination) and offers high-speed continuous shooting of full size 12.1MP images at a rate of up to 8 fps (when using EN-EL4a/4 or eight AA-size batteries).

This isn't quite D3 speed, but is getting close (note that there's no 'speed up' when shooting in crop mode – 8 fps is the absolute maximum). Unless you have a real need for this ultra high speed shooting it could be argued that the D700 / MB-D10 combination is actually more versatile than a D3, giving you the option to carry a smaller lighter body when speed isn't so crucial.

In your hand

Aside from being a bit heavier and having a much bigger full frame viewfinder, the D700 handles exactly the same as the D300. This is no bad thing; as we said at the time we reviewed the D300, you really have to pick it up to appreciate how nicely it fits into your hand. The ergonomics are great and the soft rubber used on the grip ensures holding the camera steady is an easy task. The control layout is also very sensible and easy to learn; even if you've never used a Nikon DSLR before, the clear labeling and logical positioning mean you'll be shooting and discovering the D700's features very quickly, and if you are coming from the D3 or D300 you'll be right at home.

LCD Monitor

The D700 shares the D3 and D300's new large, high resolution LCD monitor. It has four times the number of dots than the 230,000 unit used on the D2X and other such cameras. For clarity, the words pixels and dots are interchanged almost randomly in specification sheets but strictly speaking we should talk of dots (these being red, green or blue sub-pixels) when referring to the figures quoted by manufacturers. The D700's LCD has 921,600 dots, 1920 columns by 480 rows, the dots are a third thinner than they are high and so each group of three dots (sub-pixels) make up one full color pixel.

This high resolution screen really has to be seen to be appreciated, it's beautifully detailed and extremely smooth in appearance because the tiny gaps between dots are too small to be seen with the eye. This extra detail is obvious in live view and playback modes where you really can see much 'more' of the image in one glance. Another difference comes when you magnify in playback as you find you don't need to magnify the image as much before you can clearly see sharpness, focus accuracy and even noise.

One other difference between the D3/D300/D700's screen and that used previously is the layout of the dots (sub-pixels), this new screen has the same layout as your computer LCD, a simple RGB layout with all rows the same ('stripe array'). The other layout used on small LCD screens is the 'delta array' which uses an RGB pattern on one row then a BRG pattern on the row below, offset by half a pixel.

Below you can see a real-life, same-size example of the difference in resolution between this new 921,600 dot screen (on the D300, but it's the same as the D3 and D700) and a more typical 230,400 dot screen (in this case on the Canon EOS 40D). Both cameras were set in play mode with the same image (note that the D300 doesn't use the whole screen in play unless you magnify), a shot was taken of each camera from the same distance (hence the screens were captured at the same magnification).

Top Control Panel

Unlike the D3, the D700 has only one status / control panel display, which resides on the top plate (there's no room on the back for another). The panel has a green back light which can be illuminated by flicking the power switch to the lamp position, it's spring loaded and returns to 'ON', the back light stays on for the 'auto meter-off' time. You can also choose to have the backlight come on with any button press.

Displays

The D700 comes with the same excellent high resolution VGA screen that we first saw on the D3 and D300. It has a very fine pixel pitch which means you don't see any gaps and that makes for both very detailed but also surprisingly smooth gradations in flat areas of the image. Compared to a lower resolution screen this this certainly improves both Record review and playback. It's not necessary to zoom into images quite as far in playback in order to check sharpness / focus accuracy and it also transforms manual focus in live view mode into a very easy task.

Shooting information

Press the info button in shooting mode (except live view) to show a full screen 'shooting information' display, we first saw a screen like this implemented in the D40 and there are certainly circumstances where having this level of information on one single screen can be very useful. The D700's shooting information screen automatically (or optionally manually) switches from light background to dark background in low light situations. Like on the D3 and D300 the information display disappears as soon as you half-press the shutter release button and does not return, you have to press info again, it would have been nice to have a 'persistent shooting information' custom function.

Quick settings display

The Quick Settings display is a new feature that we've first seen on Nikon's D60 entry level DSLR. Press the info button in shooting mode and you'll get the shooting information display. Press it again and you'll enter the Quick settings display (the two rows of settings at the bottom of the screen). Here you navigate using the multi-controller and press OK or the multi-controller button to access and change a setting. Settings you can change in the Quick Settings display include the shooting bank, High ISO and long exposure noise reduction and the function of the preview and Fn buttons.

Virtual horizon

Like the D3 the D700 features the Virtual horizon which provides an aircraft-cockpit type live virtual horizon on the LCD monitor indicating the current orientation of the camera, perfectly horizontal or vertical and the camera axis line turns green (shown on the right below). By default the Virtual Horizon is viewed via an option from the Setup menu (although can be assigned to a button) and disappears as soon as you half-press the shutter release.

The tilt sensor can also (perhaps more practically) be displayed on the top LCD panel or inside the viewfinder (using the exposure scale) if it is assigned to the Fn button. A new (and very useful) option on the D700 is to superimpose the Virtual Horizon onto the Live View image. This option has been implemented as one of the display modes and you can cycle through those by pressing the Info button in Live View.

Record Review

You can choose for the D700 to display a review of the image taken immediately after shutter release. The type of display used will be the same as the last mode used in playback (histogram, thumbnail index, details etc.). Record review has all of the functionality of playback mode, this means it's easy to delete, magnify, protect etc. The image will remain on the screen for the 'Monitor off delay' CSM c4 or until you half-press the shutter release.

Playback

Press the Playback button to enter playback mode, press the multi selector up or down to change display mode, up to seven different pages of display detail are available. You can change the amount of information available in the basic and detailed photo display modes including optional blinking highlights and focus point display as well as the three pages of shooting information in detail mode. Note that you can switch the up/down and left/right functions of the multi selector via CSM f4 and that you can choose to also use the command dials to browse / change page via CSM f9.

Playback Zoom
The D700's playback zoom is implemented in the same manner as the D300's (and therefore different to the D3's). You use the zoom button to select zoom amount (on the D3 you use the combined zoom / thumbnail button with the rear command dial) and can use the multi-selector to move around the magnified image. Just like on the D3 and D300 there are eight zoom levels, on the high resolution screen the last two go beyond 1:1 and provide an enlarged pixelated view.

I discovered some parts from my past computer life

These connectors used to connect my very first network, before UTP connections and DSL modems, network ISA cards connected with BNC connectors.
I used them to connect my 286 and 386 PC's

My first programming steps was of course with Basic on my Spectrum 48K, and later Fortran and Borland Turbo Pascal on my PC's

…But I was playing games also…

Also I did some database programming with DBASE III and CLIPPER

And I was buying all the computer magazines on 1985 and later, like PIXEL, PC MASTER, RAM and more…

Don't forget we did not had HARD DISKS at the beginning, so we used to BOOT from MS-DOS disks and then change diskettes and load what we wanted…

Adept Quattro (ROBOT) Reaches 300 Cycles Per Second

This "packaging" robot from Adept Technology has just broken the “300 cycle per minute barrier” (their Quattro robot).
The secret, they say, is that using four arms instead of three enables higher speeds and faster accelerations. If you want to see what 300 cycles per second looks like, pay attention at about 1:30 in the video. Just amazing…!!

Το πλοίο από τα συντρίμια των Δίδυμων Πύργων

Με επευφημίες υποδέχθηκαν οι αμερικανοί στο λιμάνι της Νέας Υόρκης το πολεμικό πλοίο που φτιάχτηκε εξολοκλήρου από τα συντρίμμια των δίδυμων πύργων.

Οικογένειες των θυμάτων των τρομοκρατικών επιθέσεων της 11ης Σεπτεμβρίου βρίσκονταν στην άκρη του λιμανιού, λίγα μέτρα από το Ground Zero όπου έπεσαν οι Πύργοι.
Καθώς πλησίαζε το πλοίο, με τους ναύτες παραταγμένους στο κατάστρωμα, ακούστηκαν τρεις συμβολικοί πυροβολισμοί.

Το πλοίο κόστισε περίπου 1 δισεκατομμύριο δολάρια και κατασκευάστηκε στη Λουιζιάνα, περιλαμβάνοντας πάνω από 7,5 τόνους ατσάλι από τους Πύργους που κατέρρευσαν.

«Πρόκειται για μια συμβολική κατασκευή. Από τη δυστυχία στην ελπίδα» λένε οι παρευρισκόμενοι.

«Πρέπει να μην ξεχάσουμε. Είναι ο μοναδικός τρόπος να τιμήσουμε τα θύματα» υποστηρίζει η Τζόαν Άτλας που έχασε τον πυροσβέστη σύζυγό της, την ώρα που προσπαθούσε να σώσει εγκλωβισμένους στα συντρίμμια.

Το εν λόγω πλοίο έχει 361 άτομα πλήρωμα με το 13% των οποίων να προέρχονται από τη Νέα Υόρκη, ποσοστό που σε κάθε άλλη περίπτωση θα ήταν πολύ χαμηλότερο. Το πλοίο έχει έκταση 208 μέτρων και μπορεί να μεταφέρει περί τους 800 ναυτικούς.

Ο μοναδικός στην Ευρώπη επιταχυντής βαρέων ιόντων για τον καρκίνο

Στη Χαϊδελβέργη βρίσκεται ο πρώτος επιταχυντής βαρέων ιόντων στην Ευρώπη που καταστρέφει καρκινικούς όγκους. Σύμφωνα με τον επικεφαλή του επιταχυντή, για να λειτουργήσει χρειάζεται τόση ηλεκτρική ενέργεια, όση καταναλώνει μία πόλη 10.000 κατοίκων. Οι μόνες άλλες παρόμοιες συσκευές είναι δύο στην Ιαπωνία και καμία από τις δύο δεν βρίσκεται σε νοσοκομείο, δήλωσαν οι γιατροί.

Το Κέντρο Θεραπείας με Ακτινοβολία Ιόντων της Χαϊδελβέργης (HIT), θα αναλαμβάνει για θεραπεία 1.300 ασθενείς με όγκο στον εγκέφαλο και άλλα δύσκολα περιστατικά καρκίνων το χρόνο.
Για κάθε συνεδρία, οι Γερμανοί ασφαλιστές υγείας έχουν συμφωνήσει να πληρώνουν το ποσό των 20.000 ευρώ.

Όπως δήλωσε ο Μαρκ Μίντερ, ο γιατρός που είναι επικεφαλής του επιταχυντή, ένα δοκιμαστικό σύστημα έχει ήδη δημιουργηθεί σε μια άλλη πόλη της Γερμανίας και έχει προσφέρει τουλάχιστον 5 χρόνια επιπλέον ζωή στο 80 με 90% των 450 ασθενών που έχουν πάει για θεραπεία.

Ο HIT βρίσκεται στο κέντρο ενός νέου κτιρίου και αποτελείται από ένα δακτυλίδι βάρους 670 τόνων και διαμέτρου 13 μέτρων που επιταχύνει τα βαρέα ιόντα και τα πρωτόνια σε ταχύτητες που φτάνουν τα 3/4 της ταχύτητας του φωτός προτού πλήξουν τους όγκους.

Η Γερμανία σκοπεύει να κατασκευάσει ακόμα δύο επιταχυντές, ενώ η Ιταλία κατασκευάζει έναν στο Μιλάνο, αυξάνοντας τον αριθμό των επιταχυντών παγκοσμίως στους έξι. Στον επιταχυντή θα υπάρχει προσωπικό 24 ώρες το 24ωρο προκειμένου να παραμένει καθαρός, καθώς η σκόνη μπορεί να τον καταστρέψει.

iPhone app translates and speaks English Spanish

This application is something special, Jibbigo will translate English speech into Spanish, or Spanish into English, without going online….!

All you need do is buy and launch the $25 app, speak into your iPhone microphone, and the translation is played over the speaker and shown in text on the iPhone’s screen.

We think this system’s going to be extended into other languages, and while it’s clearly not going to help you navigate the complete linguistic lexicon, we suspect it’s a sign of applications to come, which in future could enable better communication between people, whatever their foreign language ability.

On the iPhone 3GS, the app will translate both languages at once (so you can talk naturally to one another), while earlier model iPhone users must choose which direction they want translation done.

It carries a dictionary of 40,000 words, and performs best if limited to one or two sentences at a time.

Quite overwhelmed at how this advanced technology can be held inside a multi-use device that fits inside your pocket. It’s promising, we think.

The Pershing 64 is all about style, bella figura, speed and an interior so Bauhaus that it would make Walter Gropius proud.

Ten years ago when we ran our first Pershing test all of their boats were silver or gray which made them distinctive. Not only their style, put also their silver color was widely imitated by other builders for the last decade. Now there is a whole genre of what are hardtop express yachts as large as 135’. Pershing has the distinction of being one of the early pioneers of the type.

There’s a lot to notice in this shot… the wide open saloon that brings the outdoors in… the retractable aft sunroof… nice wide sidedecks. And check out the glass everywhere. Notice the retractable aft sunroof.

Let there be light…

One of the most striking things about Pershings, and indeed the Pershing 64, is the amount of natural light that enters the boat. In the main saloon/cockpit/bridgedeck, one almost needs sunglasses to tame the amount saturating from all angles. Most notably, is the single piece front windshield. This gives an unprecedented unobstructed view through an arc of over 12’. Looking aft, there’s not only tons of light from the side windows, but the aft bulkhead is glass that, at the touch of a button, retracts completely and literally brings the outside in. And as if that weren’t enough light, the sunroof over the helm is retractable, as is the aft end over the cockpit. This is a boat that will have redheads running for shelter.

With lots of light, this is a very open saloon. The entire glass aft bulkhead retracts to combine the outdoors with the in. Notice the aft overhead is retracted in this shot. To port (right side of shot) is the port side sofa that is not only high off this deck, but much higher off the galley sole, which is four feet lower than the deck you see in this picture. With not a handrail in sight, this is a precarious seat.

The deck layout…

The cockpit deck is expansive, ending at the aft end with the large sunpad/garage. Two stairs to either side of the sunpad allow access to the swim platform. The galley is also on a significantly lower level than the saloon deck, and sitting on the port side sofa can be a cause for concern at such a lofty height. Once down in the galley, it is extremely well equipped with a slew of conveniences short of one critical aspect… no grab rails and no fiddles.

The galley is well equipped with appliances, and while there are drawers everywhere, they are only 10” deep. The area, as well as most of the interior could benefit from handrails.

Leather is everywhere in this boat, and it’s provided by Poltrona Frau, Italy’s most prestigious and internationally famous leather furniture manufacturer. It can be seen here on the seat, console, and elsewhere throughout the boat on wall and ceiling panels. This is an exclusive partnership, and fitting as the two headquarters are only 35 miles apart.

Stately comfort…

The staterooms are exactly what you would expect from Pershing. Comfortable, good looking and well thought out. The master is full beam and nestled between huge hull side windows. This is one of the significant differences from the paired cabins that were seen on the 62. The side windows also allow an amazing view of the seascape seen at water level, and the natural colors of the furnishings only enhance the natural light.

Short of the spacious and airy master, since the beam is just shy of 18’, you won’t find any cavernous spaces down below, and this is especially true in the forward stateroom, with its converging bow lines, and even more so in the rather cave like guest cabin. There is, however plenty of storage space in all staterooms and the fit and finish is exquisite.

The master stateroom is very spacious and well lit. Notice the chaise lounge tucked next to the large hull side window.

Specifications…

The Pershing 64 has an LOA of 65’9” (20 m), a beam of 17’11” (5.5 m), and a draft of 4’4” (1.3 m). She has an empty weight of 79,146 lbs (35,900 kg), her fuel capacity is 925 gallons (3,502 L). Her fully loaded displacement is 92,815 lbs. (42,189 kg.) which means she is no featherweight and it will take a couple of very large mills to move her at high speed.

Speed and Use…

While we haven’t tested this beautiful yacht to verify the numbers, Pershing tells us that even fully loaded, with her Arneson surface drives trimmed, the Pershing 64 will reach 45 kts. That’s more than 50 mph! Of course… no word on what fuel burn is at that speed, but typically, fuel costs are of little concern to a customer looking for this level of luxury. This boat is clearly about the journey, not how far the destination is.

Typically, along the French Riviera in season these boats Med moor at places such as St. Tropez, Cannes, and Antibes and motor out a few miles and anchor off of a beach for the day. Charter parties might take them a bit farther. The boat has the range to make it from France or Italy to Puerto Cervo on Sardinia, the Mecca of Europe’s richest and most famous yachtsmen. But once there you will find that the cost of fuel is the least of your expenses.

From Bauhaus to Your Boat

Italian boat builders these days seem to be trying to each be more Modern than each other when it comes to interior design and décor. The interiors are stark, austere, and simple with straight lines, solid colors and sharp corners. The origins of all of this, of course, is the Bauhaus school.

The Bauhaus had a profound influence upon subsequent developments in art, architecture, graphic design, interior design, industrial design, and typography.

Tweak Screencapture Behavior (MAC)

Normally, we will use keystrokes Cmd-Shift-3 or Cmd-Shift-4 to take snapshot with Mac default screencapture utility. And new in Snow Leopard, we will end up having a PNG image file automatically stored inside our Desktop folder with the name Screen shot
Those behaviors mentioned above are the default ones. We can of course easily change those with simple command lines on the terminal…
1. Change Screencapture Filename
  defaults write com.apple.screencapture name "New Name"
  
  killall SystemUIServer
  
  You can change the value "New Name" to the name of your liking. And if you put the name as empty string (i.e. ""), you will get your screencapture named with the format: [current date] at [time], e.g. "2009-10-20 at AM 03.02.57".
2. Change Screencapture Location
  defaults write com.apple.screencapture location "New Location"
  killall SystemUIServer
  
  Hint: You can drag-drop the folder to Terminal pane to get the folder location.
  As seen in both command lines, the second line killall SystemUIServer is needed and used to restart the screencapture application. Only after restarting, changes will take effect.
3. Change Screencapture File Format
  defaults write com.apple.screencapture type [new format]
  killall SystemUIServer
  
  These file formats are available: PNG, PDF, JPG, JP2, GIF, TIF, BMP, PICT, and TGA.
  Note. Replace the [new format] with one of those available formats, e.g. JPG.
4. Disable Window Shadow
  When we used key combination [Cmd-Shift-4] + [Space], we will be able to capture a snapshot of window along with the shadow. The following command lines are used to disable the shadow.
  defaults write com.apple.screencapture disable-shadow -bool true
  killall SystemUIServer
  
  You can change -bool true to -bool false to enable back the shadow.
5. Capture from Terminal Command
  One of these command lines can be used to capture from terminal:

Το παιχνίδι ξεκινάει με ένα πράσινο πίνακα όπου γράφετε μία λέξη, πατήστε εκκίνηση και προκαλείτε έναν φίλο σας να τη βρει.

Αφού μπείτε στο παιχνίδι επιλέξτε αν θέλετε Ελληνικά ή Αγγλικά για να γράψετε την λέξη. Γράφτε την λέξη με το πληκτρολόγιο που δημιουργήθηκε ειδικά για την εφαρμογή. Καλό φαγητό = Υγεία και μακροζωία

Το φαγητό δεν είναι φάρμακο, ωστόσο μπορεί να λειτουργήσει ευεργετικά στην πρόληψη σοβαρών παθήσεων που πλήττουν τον σύγχρονο άνθρωπο του ανεπτυγμένου κόσμου. Κι αυτό γιατί όπως τονίζει με αφορμή την Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Διατροφής (16/10) ο Αν. Καθηγητής Διατροφής του Ανθρώπου, στο Γεωπονικό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών κ. Αντώνης Ζαμπέλας (πρώην Πρόεδρος της Ελληνικής Εταιρείας Λιπιδιολογίας, Αθηροσκλήρωσης και Αγγειακής Νόσου), «η διατροφή παίζει σημαντικότατο ρόλο στην πρόληψη καρδιαγγειακών νοσημάτων γιατί μπορεί να βελτιώσει πολλούς από τους παράγοντες κινδύνου, όπως τα υψηλά επίπεδα χοληστερόλης, αρτηριακής πίεσης και γλυκόζης στο αίμα.»

«Οι αρχές της Μεσογειακής Διατροφής, συμπληρώνει ο κ Ζαμπέλας, πρέπει να τηρούνται από την παιδική ηλικία διότι έτσι μπορεί να επιτευχθεί χαμηλή πρόσληψη κορεσμένων (ζωικών), trans (μερικώς υδρογονωμένων) λιπαρών, χοληστερόλης και νατρίου, αλλά και η ικανοποιητική πρόσληψη ακόρεστων λιπαρών (φυτικά λιπαρά, ιχθυέλαια), φυτικών ινών, βιταμινών και ανόργανων στοιχείων».

Σύμφωνα με τον κ Ζαμπέλα στο καθημερινό διαιτολόγιο κάθε ανθρώπου, πρέπει να βρίσκονται δημητριακά ολικής άλεσης, φρούτα, λαχανικά, ελαιόλαδο και γαλακτοκομικά χαμηλής περιεκτικότητας σε λίπος. Το ψάρι, τα πουλερικά και τα όσπρια πρέπει να καταναλώνονται 1-2 φορές την εβδομάδα ενώ το κόκκινο κρέας σε μικρές ποσότητες και αφού αφαιρεθεί το ορατό λίπος.

Προσοχή στις ετικέτες

Ο καταναλωτής πρέπει πλέον να αρχίζει να διαβάζει με προσοχή τις ετικέτες στις συσκευασίες των τροφίμων και να προσπαθεί να κάνει σωστές επιλογές, όπως τρόφιμα χαμηλής περιεκτικότητας σε ολικό λίπος, κορεσμένα και trans λιπαρά, νάτριο, και επιπρόσθετη ζάχαρη.

Το μαγείρεμα επίσης παίζει σημαντικό ρόλο. Κατά το τηγάνισμα δημιουργούνται trans λιπαρά οξέα και επομένως καλό είναι τα τρόφιμα είτε να βράζονται είτε να ψήνονται. Το αλάτι περιέχει νάτριο άρα δεν πρέπει να αλατίζεται το τρόφιμο κατά το μαγείρεμα και δεν πρέπει να χρησιμοποιείται επιτραπέζιο αλάτι. Προσοχή στις κρυφές πηγές νατρίου στη διατροφή όπως πολλά είδη τυριών, ψωμί, πίκλες κ.α.

Τέλος επειδή η διατροφή δεν είναι φάρμακο αλλά μία ευχαρίστηση, πρέπει να την απολαμβάνουμε με παρέα και όχι μπροστά στην τηλεόραση. Αυτό θα βοηθήσει να προσλαμβάνονται μικρότερες ποσότητες, και αν οι ενήλικες δίνουν το καλό παράδειγμα στα παιδιά τους θα έχουν επιτελέσει έναν από τους σημαντικούς ρόλους τους στην οικογένεια.

Ferretti 740 (2009)

The Ferretti 740 will catch as many eyes motoring out of Newport as it does tooling down the Italian coast.

If you managed to miss the ’09 Genoa boat show in Italy, chances are, you haven’t yet laid eyes on the new semi-custom Ferretti 740. We can say hull number one, revealed here, is indeed elegant and it has a fearsome 30-knot-plus top speed that makes it a party waiting to happen – but not waiting long! How about Bimini in an hour and a half, Antibes in an hour, Newport in three hours?

The saloon of the 740 maintains the structural line of the Ferretti 731, but features a new layout. The dining area is fully integrated into the space without bulkheads or partitions, but is set off by a step up to the level of the main deck that includes the galley and pilothouse.

Elegance is in the eyes of the beholder—and on a semi-custom or custom yacht, it is the owner and often an interior designer who define the ambience. The owner of this yacht opted for a bright, contemporary color scheme of ivory, beige and brown that maximizes the natural light the 740’s abundant windows collect. The fabrics and finishes clearly pay no heed to woody nautical tradition, which are so yesterday.

This package works well as long as you don’t have a) young children; b) a passion for red wine; or c) a large dog that likes to roll in the mud.

The main deck with the saloon, formal dining area, galley and pilothouse. It’s a pretty standard layout except for the stern area which is a Mecca for watersports. We like the passerrelle off to the port side which keeps the “teak beach” from being bifurcated, which often occurs on Italian boats of this size.

Getting four staterooms, each with en suite heads, into a 74-footer is not as easy as it sounds. Ferretti has cleverly done it by placing the master head to port of the sleeping area and fitting the walk-in closet behind the stairs below. Note the large bi-fold curved doors on the shower in the middle of the master bath. This adds a bit of romance and innovation to the 740. American owners will probably replace the three bidets with cabinets for towels. The placement of the fuel tank directly abaft the master stateroom bed serves as a good sound insulation shield and by being located here will not change the boat’s trim as fuel is burned off.

Driving a boat the size of the Ferretti 740 at 30 knots is a thrill, but of course, most people only do that for short bursts when slower clunkers are around just to let them know where the horsepower throbs. Note the large portlights on the hull sides which open up the accommodations below to light and water views. Italian builders have led the world in this innovation.

Europeans don’t play games when it comes to performance. Not only do they like to look sharp, they like to go fast. Standard power on the Ferretti 740 is a pair of 1,360-hp MAN V12 diesels, which the builder says will propel the boat to a 31-knot top speed. If you want to go a shade faster and burn a bit more fuel, 1,550-hp MANs are available. Range is 360 and 315 miles respectively.

A Good Chartering Package

Several years ago, the Ferretti Group’s Advanced Yacht Technology division introduced a new stabilizer system called ARG (Anti-Rolling Gyro). Developed in concert with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, ARG is offered as an option on the Ferretti 740. If you plan to anchor off, a stabilizing system can be well-worth the investment if you have an annoying rolly sea. Most megayachts built these days have some kind of at-anchor stabilizing system on board, and of course, it won’t hurt the 740’s resale value a bit and more likely will separate it from the other boats on the market in class.

But the most immediate use of the ARG system is to make the 740 more attractive on the charter market. There are hundreds of boats competing for the lucrative summer rentals in the Med, and few of those boats have an anti-roll system. While many boats may have fin stabilizer systems, they are not effective at anchor, where most of the annoying rolling occurs. Ferretti’s ARG system will set this vessel apart.

Also important for the charter trade are the four state rooms. Three stateroom motoryachts are increasingly harder to rent. Note that each of the staterooms has an en suite head with separate shower. These two amenities should guarantee good charter action.

Another advantage to this layout for chartering is the fact that it is a galley-up configuration. Some charter parties like to have access to the galley, and others will want it strictly for the crew. With the galley up, it works both ways.

If you’ve ever wondered how Italian women get their beautiful bronzed bodies, feast your eyes on the bunny pads and flying bridge of the Ferretti 740. The upper deck of the 740 is made for maximum interaction with the sun gods. It has a substantial al fresco dining area and a helm placed farther aft than we usually see and that means it will be more comfortable under way. The pilot seat rotates 360 degrees so the helmsman can interact with guests at the dinette. If you want, Ferretti will make the boat for you with a hard top and retractable Bimini.

Ferretti works hard to blend sweeping curves and modern design into its motoryachts without forgetting its nautical heritage. Note the teak decks which remind us that we are on a yacht. Ο Δανός φωτογράφος, Erik Refner, παίρνει την άδεια από τον πατέρα ενός νεκρού παιδιού από το Αφγανιστάν να παραβρεθεί στην προετοιμασία ταφής του και να πάρει μερικές φωτογραφίες, στον προσφυγικό καταυλισμό του Jalozai του Πακιστάν.

Εκδηλώθηκαν τρομοκρατικές επιθέσεις εναντίον στόχων στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες. Σε τέσσερα πολιτικά αεροσκάφη εκδηλώθηκε αεροπειρατεία, και τα τρία από αυτά οδηγήθηκαν από τους αεροπειρατές και προσέκρουσαν στους Δίδυμους Πύργους του Παγκόσμιου Κέντρου Εμπορίου και το Πεντάγωνο, ενώ το τέταρτο συνετρίβη σε ανοικτό χώρο. Οι Δίδυμοι Πύργοι κατέρρευσαν λίγη ώρα μετά τις συγκρούσεις των αεροσκαφών επάνω τους, προκαλώντας χιλιάδες απώλειες: εκτός των 19 αεροπειρατών, συνολικά από τις επιθέσεις, 2973 άνθρωποι έχασαν την ζωή τους και 24 μένουν αγνοούμενο

ΗΠΑ 2004
Ο μικρός Ιρακινός Saleh, ο οποίος έχει ακρωτηριαστεί από αμερικανική βόμβα στο Ιράκ, νοσηλεύεται σε νοσοκομείο του Όκλαντ, στην Καλιφόρνια, για να πραγματοποιηθούν διορθωτικές επεμβάσεις. Τα άλλα παιδιά, αρχίζουν να τον κοροϊδεύουν για την εμφάνισή του και ο μικρός αναστατώνεται. Οι νοσοκόμες για να τον ηρεμήσουν δένουν πάνω στο ακρωτηριασμένο του χέρι, ένα μολύβι. Ο μικρός Saleh τότε ζωγραφίζει ένα αεροπλάνο που ρίχνει βόμβες.
Η φωτογραφία ελήφθη από την Deanne Fitzmaurice και τιμήθηκε με βραβείο Πούλιτζερ το 2005.

Ένα μικρό αγόρι βοηθά τον ακρωτηριασμένο πατέρα του να ντυθεί. Η φωτογραφία ελήφθη από τον Γιάννη Κόντο και κέρδισε το Πρώτο βραβείο του World Press Photo 2005 στην κατηγορία «Σύγχρονα Ζητήματα» (Contemporary Issues).

Ιούλιος 2008
Μια φωτογραφία ντροπή. Σε μια παραλία της Νάπολι στην Ιταλία, δυο νεαρές Αθίγγανες, η 14χρονη Βιολέτα και η 16χρονη Χριστίνα, βούτηξαν στη θάλασσα για να δροσιστούν. Πνίγονται όμως καθώς δεν γνωρίζουν κολύμπι. Τα πτώματά τους μεταφέρονται και παραμένουν για 3 ώρες στην παραλία. Οι λουόμενοι που βρίσκονται εκεί κοντά, ατάραχοι και απαθείς, συνεχίζουν το μπάνιο τους και την ηλιοθεραπεία τους, σαν να μην πρόκειται για πτώματα ανθρώπων, αλλά για φύκια που ξέβρασε η θάλασσα.

Στο Πανεπιστημιακό νοσοκομείο του Οχάιο των ΗΠΑ, η Therese Frare αποτυπώνει στον φακό της τις τελευταίες στιγμές του ετοιμοθάνατου και προσβληθέντα από τον ιό του AIDS, ακτιβιστή David Kirby. Δίπλα του είναι ο πατέρας του, η αδερφή του και η ανιψιά του. Η φωτογραφία πρωτοδημοσιεύθηκε τον Νοέμβριο του 1990 στο περιοδικό Life, αλλά έγινε παγκοσμίως γνωστή όταν χρησιμοποιήθηκε σε διαφήμιση της Benetton το 1991 προκαλώντας σάλο.
